
Started tryna get hired, ended up getting acquired…
Last week, I said something simple: "Hey, I need my resume portfolio site to be better."
Today, I have a fully proactive agentic operating system that's beginning to feel like what our phones will become in the next decade.
They wanted a portfolio. I gave them a system.
This is the story of how that happened, and why it matters.
The Starting Point: Just Make It Better
They said "where's your portfolio?"
I laughed. Wrong laugh. Too loud.
The request was straightforward. My portfolio site needed:
- Better logos for the experience section
- A custom favicon
- Fix some build issues
- Maybe upgrade to the latest Next.js
Standard stuff. The kind of incremental improvements you make to keep things current.
But here's the thing: I had systems half-alive, ideas pacing, no museum for them yet. No shrine. No screenshots. No tidy lie.
Just me, holding things together with duct tape and intent.
They wanted a link. I panicked. Built a surface.
They wanted samples. I shipped something that kept evolving when you looked away.
Every question turned into a feature. Every doubt refused to stay quiet.
The Pivot: From Site to System
The shift happened organically. I wasn't planning to build an OS. I was just following the thread of "what would make this better?"
Week 1, Day 1-2: Fixed the build, added logos, upgraded frameworks. Standard maintenance.
Day 3: Added an iOS-style home screen. Because why not? It's more interesting than a navigation bar.
Day 4: Built a drag-and-drop app system. Apps as modes of thinking, not just pages.
Day 5: Created AI James: a personal AI assistant that lives in the dock, always available but never intrusive.
Day 6: Made AI James proactive. It watches what you're doing, understands context, and suggests next steps. Not pushy. Just helpful.
Day 7: Realized I'd built something bigger than a portfolio.
They wanted a portfolio. I gave them a system.
What I Built: The Agent OS
Today, jamesspalding.org is a fully functional operating system with:
25+ Real-Time Themes
A design system that adapts to context. Change the theme, change the entire experience. CSS custom properties cascade through everything, creating a cohesive visual language that feels alive.
iOS-Style Home Screen
Drag-and-drop app icons. Folders. Lock screen with smooth unlock animations. Dynamic Island showing AI status. It feels like your phone, but it's a web app.
AI James: The Proactive Agent
This is where it gets interesting. AI James isn't a chatbot. It's an operator.
- It watches your behavior and learns your patterns
- It suggests next steps based on what you're doing
- It creates custom tooling for your specific needs
- It's always available but never intrusive
Right now, AI James can:
- Generate PRDs and project briefs
- Create design direction documents
- Build prototypes on demand
- Orchestrate workflows across apps
- Learn from your interactions and get smarter
But here's the key: it's proactive, not reactive.
The Apps: Modes of Thinking
Each app represents a different way of working:
- Design: 25+ themes, design system library, component showcase
- Product: Problem framing, PRD generation, workflow builder
- Projects: Kanban board, roadmap, real-time collaboration
- Prototyping: Full IDE in the browser, Cursor-like experience
- Jamz: Music studio with Web Audio API, multi-track editing
- Notes: Hierarchical note-taking with search
- Calendar: Google Calendar integration, booking system
- Contacts: QR code generation, vCard export
- Weather: Location-based forecasts with Irish sayings
- Terminal: Full terminal experience with custom commands
- Threads: Multi-threaded AI conversations
- Studio: Advanced music production tools
Each app is a complete experience. Not a demo. Not a mockup. A working system.
The Backend: Real Infrastructure
This isn't just frontend polish. I built:
- Clerk authentication for secure access
- Convex real-time database for persistence
- Session-based AI context that remembers across interactions
- Proactive engagement engine that learns user patterns
- Notification system that surfaces relevant suggestions
The Vision: Personalized Software
They said "show your best work."
I said "best when?"
Because nothing useful stays finished. The magic's not the artifact. It's the bit that keeps mutating after everyone leaves the room.
Here's what I realized this week: custom, personalized software is the future for everyone.
Right now, we all use the same apps. We adapt our workflows to fit software designed for millions of people. But what if software adapted to us?
So I built a place where ideas don't freeze. Where context stays warm. Where momentum survives handovers.
This isn't a website. It's a habitat.
Ideas compound. They federate. They don't die politely.
You don't close the tab. You inherit it.
That's what I'm building. An operating system that:
- Learns your objectives (not just your preferences)
- Creates what you need (apps, workflows, documents generated on demand)
- Self-improves (gets better as you use it)
- Feels like your phone (familiar UX, not technical dashboards)
This is what iPhones and Android will become. Not just smart assistants. Agentic operating systems that understand context, anticipate needs, and create custom solutions.
The Creative Technologist Approach
This project showcases my approach to building:
1. Start Small, Think Big
I didn't set out to build an OS. I set out to fix a portfolio. But I kept asking "what would make this better?" and following that thread.
They wanted credentials. I gave them leverage.
They wanted output. I gave them momentum.
They wanted a résumé. I gave them a runtime.
They wanted a snapshot. I gave them a moving target.
2. Build in Public
313 commits. 103+ PRs. One person. Built in public. Every decision is visible. Every iteration is documented.
3. Artifact-First
Every feature produces something tangible. Not just conversation. Real outputs: PRDs, prototypes, design directions, code.
4. Operator-First Philosophy
The user is the operator. AI is the assistant. The system never takes autonomous action without explicit intent. Every suggestion is a proposal, not a decision.
5. Consent-First Privacy
No data stored server-side by default. No tracking cookies. No behavioral analytics without consent. No dark patterns.
What's Next: 8gent.app
Funny how fast the tone shifts.
First it's "can you do the work?"
Then it's "how big is this?"
Then nobody asks how it works anymore. They ask how fast it could belong to someone else.
This portfolio is becoming something bigger. Soon, it'll be 8gent.app: a platform where anyone can have their own personal AI operating system.
They wanted a contractor. I shipped an operator.
They wanted a hire. I built an accelerant.
Didn't mean to raise the stakes. I was just trying to explain myself.
Turns out clarity scales. And structure sells.

I'm not building another tool.
I'm building the place where tools live.
